Brads Guitar Amplifier Isolation box Build

Brads Isolation Box Build I decided to build this after trying all amp simulation and being left with a niggling feeling that I was underdoing my guitar playing by not going all-analogue, which is the holy-grail of guitar tone The design is my own ,drawing on other projects I had seen Take 7 pieces of dense wood (I used 1 inch thick mdf) of dimensions: 15(inch)x15 (x3) 15x36 (x2) 17x36 (x2) Cut out hole for speaker and mounting screws(u have to do measurements once u get your speaker through..Im using a Celestion G12T-75 as favoured by Yngwie Malmsteen-my favourite guitarist ever)..I used a compass and ruler etc: Also I put brackets on centre speaker wood section to aid stability ..cutting the drill holes now is very good idea before creating the box Now wood glue box together: drying times lengthy..eg I left mine 48hours.. and voila!( seal with a silicone sealant..make lower box airtight(drying time was about I decided 48hours) put on draught excluder to make lid airtight: put on brackets: mount speaker and foam..The foam I then used to acoustically treat the box was basically 2 inches thick ultimately..(I got egg box foam but I fitted two together to make a slab..much easier to line the box with..):I got 15x15 tiles of foam which fitted box just swell!this was all preplanned! At this point I stuck a last piece of foam to lid to complete the foam cell but Its difficult to push down as the foam grips other foam it touches so I made a piece that I manually place into the ...

hey dude would the foam material make a massive difference? and if so where can i pick some up? and for how much? thanks man

@scottyBoland .its not primarily designed for dropping volume…although it does reduce it…its more to cut reflections ie reverb so sound is just the miked cab and not miked cab and reverb created by that..the box primarily is for dropping volume…try going on ebay to start a search

ahhh well i was just wondering i once dismatled an old jbl l100 century 3 way speaker, from the mid 70’s? it was a really popular speaker at its time my dad had 4 so i took the one with most abuse and took it apart the box was stuffed with an insulation like material, so i was wondering if that like the foam you used would make a difference from a hollow sound too a deep sound, like i took it out played it and vice versa and it was deeper with it in, and sounded fuller

cool video, but in your box you havent got enough variation for your mic position, because you have a fix mic stand. better will be a “swan neck”, i dont know how you call it in english. havent you enough money for some correct input/mic jacks?

What does an Iso cab really? I have never used one.

  6. Skywalkerfamily on January 19th, 2010 2:07 pm

@highspooky I think that would be called a goose neck.

  10. BRADHblackdragon on January 24th, 2010 3:48 am

@PoftheBR hi yeah, mic placement was just temporary..no recordings im afraid

fair enough mate, my friend uses progs like this, quick question its probably dumb because i’m one of those people who plays guitar but doesn’t know anything about it XD is there a way of hooking up my guitar to my pc without using a pod or something, basiclly without spending a wod of cash. i do have a line6 spider 3 75 watt with all the presets n stuff, but there’s no room for it in my tiny bedsit :p

@r33d2k well a great way is the alesis guitar link..its literally a guitar jack on one end and a usb link on other.the sound quality wont be fantastic but it’ll do.next after that would be a stealth plug by ik multimedia or the guitar rig mobile,i guess

  14. r33d2k on January 25th, 2010 9:52 am

thanks for the quick reply dude, do you think the sound quality would be better or worse plugin it into the mic jack instead of using a usb lead

  15. BRADHblackdragon on January 25th, 2010 11:40 am

@r33d2k it isnt necessarily better..one factor here is the conversion…from analogue(your guitar)to digital(a form that is needed for pc to process the signal)this is done by ‘converters’ which vary in quality.
its more a case that u might not be able to just plug in to the mic jack..ive tried i think and i couldnt get to work..i think because the signal is too weak for your guitar software or daw to work with

this doesn’t really answer my question dude, i kinda wanted a yes or a no, not i tried “i think” lol, so i know if its worth buying the adapter or not.

  22. dannyhood66 on April 28th, 2010 2:15 pm

This song and album is by far some of the best neo classical metal of all..The album cover did not give it justice..Maximum security

How quiet is this? Got a video of you playing through it to show how much sound bleeds through? I’m looking to build something like this to record with in my apt. Amp Simulation software still doesn’t sound right :/

  24. axxessdenied on April 29th, 2010 9:00 am

@r33d2k Check out the JamLab by M-Audio.

@axxessdenied @axxessdenied .dont expect miracles but fairly good.amp simulation is best i reckon now..amplitube 3 my fave,,,great room mic feature…where if you use just these and turn off close mics and use good headphones or monitors sounds like playing in a room like real thing.ik multimedia done a/b vids on youtube with real amps and they sound identical pretty much…im not affilated..amp sim leagues ahead than getting real amp now i reckon..e.g. in terms of cost
