It's really fun, and a cool thing to do, and the rewards are great -- Your IQ increases (fact), you have fun (as long as you set the correct gradient), and of course the point is to be able to play music.
You're going to have to make a choice early on about the path you want to pursue.
Do you want to learn to play guitar free?
If you do, then hopefully you paid attention in school and you've learned how to learn things. If you didn't attention in school, and don't feel confident that you actually have learned how to learn things, then perhaps you shouldn't make your music learning task more difficult by insisting that you're learning be without cost.
Want to learn to play guitar online?
Well in actual fact, you can find a number of really helpful websites, including this one, and even videos on YouTube. Frankly these are best if you want to learn one particular thing, such as a riff to this or a blues technique such as that.
Best way to learn fast ...
Number one: get a teacher. The best teacher is someone who plays locally in your neighborhood or town. Now just because someone is a good player doesn't mean they are worth beans as a teacher, so sign on for one lesson and in the back of your mind realize that first lesson is for you to evaluate your teachers teaching skill.
Number two: get a good "learn to play guitar" course. There is one particular course that has been a bestseller in the USA and in the world, and it's not particularly expensive. It's called Jamarama.
There are other courses for how to learn the blues, how to play lead, how to play bass guitar, etc., but for an overall "learn to play gutair" course, Jamarama cannot be beat, in my opinion.

How to Have Fun? Play Gutair!
If you learn to play guitar, then you can learn to play guitar songs, and you can learn new things from any learn to play guitar DVD, and if you're a fast learner, that just means you can learn to play guitar facts.
Which is best? Book or Video?
Which do you think is best? Using a learn to play guitar video, or learn to play gutair from a book? Well, of course in some ways, the very best as a teacher, but you may not live near one, you may not know one, and not every good guitar player is worth any good as a teacher. Doesn't matter how good he is if you can't learn it fairly easily. If you're not having fun and learning quickly, you will tend to give it up, and where does that get you?
You can learn to play the guitar
Book or video doesn't really matter, what is really important if you wish to learn to play guitar it's exactly the same situation as if you wanted to learn to play the piano.
What makes the difference -- and makes you learn fast or slow -- is not whether you're using a learn to play guitar video or to play gutair from a book, or for that matter from a teacher, because...
What matters most are two simple things:

- you provide regular but modest practice time
