Thanks for your reply Steve. I’ve been concentrating on the bumditty, still on the way to internalizing it as you suggest, but that basic technique is coming along well. I don’t know what steps to take after I get really comfortable with it though. Am intending to sign up at rythemstrummer at that time. Will the additional clawhammer lessons there explain it all to me? I really want to get good at this! Thanks.
@MrTelemeister@MrTelemeister I am glad you’re taking it slowly. Yes, when you feel “bum-dittified” you would probably benefit from the RhythmStrummer clawhammer lessons. I have several specific tunes that I teach and the lessons are very detailed and quite long. I just did a new one this month, and there is plenty there to keep you occupied. And once you have these down, the idea is to be able to make your own music with clawhammer style.
All the best,
sb
@RhythmStrummerDotCom OK OK, I changed my mind, I now sometimes use a thumb pick and it works equally well. Sounds a bit different but is also good.

Thanks
This style is very very nice.
I actually discovered this style, looking for ‘clawhammer’ (as a mis-informed englishman looking for the ‘prince charles technique’ that you speak of! haha) but been practicing this for hours cos I dig it so much! just tryin to stay off that steering wheel while I learn to keep that rhythm. thanks for the vid man
THIS IS AWESOME
Not only it gives you new technique but also helps you learn other techiques easier
Thx for the video
you don’t wanna see my hands after a hours on a hoe
if you want some more insight to the clawhammer style check out some of David Holt’s clips. he is truly a master of the old styles of the Appalachians, and a great entertainerand teacher. Wonderful video Steve. Really inspiring. Thanks.

You explain this so well! Love the motor analogy. Very helpful!
Cool it with the Caps Lock, buddy.
I am trying seperately hard to imagine Prince Charles playing the guitar. I doubt if he hase ever used aclaw hammer of any kind!
I think that guitar is bolted down to something, it doesnt move !
I LIKE THIS GUY.
Really good clear instruction.. Brilliant.
Thankyou
2:15 And the obvious Question comes up: ” Steve Vai on? earth…”
Great! This is the first REAL clawhammer guitar I’ve seen. Even in North America, many folks call the “Carter Scratch”(thumb on the downbeat of one and two and nails on the downbeat of 2 and 4) . The nails on the downbeat is true clawhammer. I’m sure you must be a banjer player.
does mark knopfler(dire straits) use this kind of picking?…in songs like ” walk of life”?
Do I have to be at a particular skill level to do this?
cammilla is ulgy as hell bla bla bla bla oh and my mom COME ON WITH IT ALREADY
whats the tuning of your guitar ?
Steve, you are influencing many people, I am practicing this technique and I’m starting to get it!…… its a thrill.
Thank you…… Bravo
You rock, Steve. Making the world a better place….
im english, and i dont like prince charles, or crumpets and tea. lol
It’s funny, my hand usually gets stuck like that when I don’t have a hoe.
Weird. My hand usually gets stuck like that when I don’t have a hoe.
spent a few hours with a HO, this kind of HO… still getting a mental picture either way.
